The Influence Of The Media

The media has a huge influence on our lives; from the way we dress to the way we act in public.

One thing media hasn’t influenced is the way we act at home. We only act the way we do in public is because we take our cues from the media. At home we can be who we want to be, no one will judge.

The jaw dropping, bullet curving, undercover secret agent, Angelina Jolie, looks absolutely fabulous as she walks down the red carpet. Her clothes are stylish and her hair and makeup are perfect.

We don’t know for sure what Angelina looks like at home. In reality, celebrities are just like we are and surely also have bad hair when they get out of bed. But, because of Brand Ange, she always looks perfect in public. That’s what everyone expects.

Imagine a world where everyone looked the way they wanted to and there was no media to show us the way we should look.

Do you think that our society would crash? Would business men wear pyjamas and would the President appear in parliament in his boxers?

That sounds weird doesn’t it? Perhaps only because of the influence of the media.  Without the influence of the media perhaps boxers would be the appropriate uniform to address parliament in.

We do know the media will always be there; always around the corner on the next billboard, TV, cell phone, newspaper. Anywhere you can paste a picture.

What about Lady Gaga’s meat dress? Did you know that she said it was the most uncomfortable outfit she has ever worn?

No wonder. It weighed a staggering 23 kilograms. What was her motive? Perhaps her point was that fitting in is not always the way to go.

In the words of her song ‘Born This Way”’ she’s happy with the way she was born. Naked, fleshy, with no obligation to fit in, and no clothes to hide her blemishes. It seems that she is happy the way she is. Lady Gaga seems to like standing out. Maybe that is why everyone loves her, because she’s so different.

One thing that won’t be easily be forgotten is Nicki Minaj's VMA Candy Raver Outfit, the dress an explosion of symmetry and colour.

This outfit makes you believe a robot anime princess has come to life. You are forced to stare, trance-like, into her metallic prism peplum while thinking about nothing but dancing ice cream cones and creepy-happy dolls.

Nicki’s hair on the day added to the ice-cream dream, with shades of yellow, white and pink.  Her head was the perfect representation of ice cream from a soft-serve machine.

The mask just made her look like more of a ninja; no one really knows where that idea came from.

But wait! What was that doll dragging behind her? Yet another Japanese art work, woven carefully into her collage of different shapes and colours to make what we know as The Raver Dress.

To sum this all up, even the most well-known people in the world try to stand out, to be different.

It could just because they’re famous, or maybe they are famous because they stand out so much?

Maybe you should try it, maybe you will be a one hit wonder. Put a purple triangle on your head, walk out in public and see who is there to take pictures.

Maybe standing out is a good thing, it could just make you rich and famous one day.
