The Grace Of Art

Art is all around us

By Caroline Bergmann

The grace of art is all around us. It can be found anywhere from the magnificent works in the halls of a grand museum to those little sketches you draw in the corner of your textbook. Art can change the way we see beauty and perceive situations. It is music made to be seen, and not heard with your ears, but with your heart.

The artists of today aim to express themselves through their artworks by taking something ordinary, and altering it into something extraordinary, so as to make you look at the world through their eyes.

Inspiration can be found in the simplest of things, like a flower in the garden or a single leaf falling from an ancient tree. It can be through a deeply emotional experience that an artist picks up a paint brush and pallet and coats the canvas with the colours that reflect the mood of his soul.

Artist, Norbert Schling was born in 1964 in Brakpan, South Africa. He attended primary school in Brakpan where he became the head boy. Completing his high school education at Hoogland High he moved on to University to study languages. His passion for art started at a young age, but he received no training other than a few workshops during his school career. Today his artworks are sought after and treasured.

His stunning oil on canvas artwork entitled “Richtersveld” is valued at around R65 000. This is only one example of his clearly brilliant talent.

Norbert Schling is one of the greatest inspiration to South African artists, showing that you can be anywhere in the world and still have a thriving career. He has sold many of his works overseas. Schling brings us into his world with such clarity and detail that it takes your breath away.

Schling also opened his own school of arts, where he accepts people from all ages and races; the only prerequisite for admission is a passion for the art. Currently this art school has around sixty enthusiastic students and they thrive under his guidance. He encourages them from the very basic techniques to a stage where they are able to develop their own styles.

Norbert's students have received numerous certificates of the highest accolades across a large spectrum of art competitions.
